Album Art Mock Up
DIGM 2353 - Page Layout and Design
This project was created to be an album art for an artist inspired by a classic style of design. The text on the back of the album reads:

“The Dada movement is often described as an expansion of the anti-art movement, that is a deconstruction and rejection of the logical society and the wealthy individuals that drive it. Dada art was often used for political protest and absurd in nature. Dada artists often use techniques such as Photo-collage, Surrealism, Assemblage, and Cut Up. However, the most common unifying theme for the dada movement is the nature of political and social commentary.
The Strokes are an American rock band from Manhattan, New York formed in 1998. Their 6th studio album “The New Abnormal” released in 2020.They are a large part of the garage rock, post punk revival, and the indie rock movements. The songs in the Strokes Album “The New Abnormal” focus deconstructing the ever-changing nature of relationships, using older musical styles mixed with the strokes usual style as motifs. The songs are often negative and critical of relationships and how people handle them.
The Strokes’ focus on deconstructing relationships matches with the Dada movement’s challenge to the definitions of art. While the Strokes earlier work matches very well with the Berlin style of Dada due to its post punk revival influences and style, The Strokes newest album “The New Abnormal” matches extremely well with the more expressionistic Dada art of Kurt Schwitters.
Kurt Schwitters used recycled items in collage style art to attempt to express the everchanging world. The stokes used recycled melodies and older styles to express changing relationships between people and society. Both “The New Abnormal” and Schwitters artwork seek to show how our society functions. Schwitters was often pushed out of the Berlin Dada movement due to his particular style, eventually he coined his own brand of Dada which he called Merz.

I Chose this specific piece from Schwitters work due to its focus on the human figure in the photo and how its covered by other images. This deconstruction reminds me of the purpose of this particular Strokes album”
Digifest Design Mock-up
DIGM 2353 - Page Layout and Design
This project was a system of designs made as a mock up for the UH Digifest event. The theme of the event was convergence. My design got to that by having a clashing visual and layout. The two separate halves where different but ultimately were part of the same image.

The artwork was done in Adobe Illustrator as a simple trace. Quite a few models were considered when deciding what face to use for the design. Due to Covid the final decision had to be the easiest to photograph which ended up being the model chosen.
